If you think about AI solving crimes like a detective or Sherlock Holmes, that is not happening yet. But AI can definitely be used for some tasks such as recognizing people in videos that can be useful for some police.
It can also be used for tasks such as authorship recognition that is to guess who wrote some anonymous text, by comparing with text written by some people.
I think there are many possibilities of using AI for solving crimes.

The problem with today's society is most of people having misconceptions about Artificial Intelligence.
As you mentioned AI will not replace polices in-fact not many jobs as well it will only enhances the way we work by assisting us in various way and removing mundane tasks.
In crime and police context- AI will help police by enabling them to detect the criminals or criminal behavior through machine learning.
For Instance:
If a person is carrying a weapon in public places or any restricted area. AI can detect the weapon and can send alarm to the nearest police station which help polices to reach the spot even before crime is being done.This way they control the crime and anti social activities.This is just one of the instance. AI can even help polices in much more ways.

Yes, privacy is an important issue. Many AI framework requires a lot of data for training and a lot of data is personal data.
